SFP vs SFP+

SFP Definition

SFP specifications are based on IEEE802.3 and SFF-8472 with the max speed of 4.25 Gbps.  The SFP stands for Small Form-factor Pluggable. It is a hot-pluggable transceiver that plugs into the SFP port of a network switch and commonly supports Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel either in the multimode or sing-mode fibers.

 

SFP+ Definition

The SFP+ supports data rates up to 16 Gbps and it is an enhanced version of the SFP which is based on SFF-8431.  SFP+ is commonly found in 10Gbit Ethernet or 8/16 Gbit FibreChannel technologies.
